If you’ve been cramming a third kid, a carpool buddy, or grandma into a car that was never meant to seat more than five, this is the first Model Y that actually has room. Here’s what’s different, what it costs, and whether it’s worth the jump for your family.

What Makes the Model Y L Different
The Model Y L isn’t a trim level — it’s a physically longer car. Tesla stretched the wheelbase by 5.9 inches (150mm) to 119.7 inches and added roughly 7 inches (180mm) to the overall length compared to the standard Model Y. That extra length goes entirely into creating a usable third row, something the regular Model Y has never offered.
Seating is a 2+2+2 layout: two front seats, two second-row captain’s chairs, and a two-person third row — six seats total, not the 7-seat bench-style layout some competitors use. The second-row captain’s chairs get heating, ventilation, powered armrests, one-touch fold, and they slide forward to let kids climb through to the third row without an adult needing to fold anything down first.
Third-Row Space and Family Fit
Tesla designed the third row to fit adults on shorter trips, not just kids — it has heated seats, power recline, and its own child-seat (LATCH) anchors, so a properly fitted car seat can go back there if needed. That LATCH hardware in row three is the detail that matters most for families cross-shopping this for carpool or grandparent duty: it’s a real seating position, not an emergency jump seat.
The second row also gets its own 8-inch touchscreen and two 50W cooled wireless charging pads, so backseat device battles have one less excuse.
Cargo Space
With the second and third rows folded, the Model Y L holds about 89.6 cubic feet of cargo — roughly 14 cubic feet more than the standard Model Y’s 75.5 cubic feet. That’s a meaningful jump if you’re regularly hauling strollers, sports gear, and luggage on top of carrying more passengers.
Range, Performance & Charging
The launch configuration is dual-motor AWD standard, with an EPA-estimated 325 miles of range and a 0–60 mph time of about 4.4 seconds. Peak DC fast charging on a Supercharger gets a 10–80% charge in roughly 25–30 minutes, using the same native NACS port as every other current Model Y — so if you’ve already got a home charger or a Supercharger habit, nothing about your routine changes.
Price & Availability
At launch, there’s only one configuration: the Premium AWD “Launch Series” at $61,990 plus a $1,390 destination fee, putting the out-the-door price a little over $63,000. For comparison, that’s about $4,000 more than a Model Y Performance and roughly $22,000 more than the base RWD Model Y — the third row and extra length come at a real premium, and there’s no cheaper trim yet (Tesla has hinted one is coming, but hasn’t given a timeline).
The Model Y L is orderable now in the US and Puerto Rico, with deliveries expected in October–November 2026. It is not yet available in Canada.
Is the Model Y L Worth It for Your Family?
If you’re regularly running with more than five people — a third kid, a consistent carpool, or grandparents who ride along — the Model Y L solves a problem the standard Model Y simply can’t. The LATCH anchors and heated seats in row three make it a genuine seating position rather than a compromise, and the extra cargo room helps once that row is in use.
If you only occasionally need a sixth seat, the $22,000 premium over a base Model Y is a lot to pay for capacity you’ll use a few times a year — renting a larger vehicle for those trips, or looking at a three-row SUV from another brand, may pencil out better.
