We don’t test every product on this site with a stopwatch and a lab report. Here’s exactly what “Research-Based Recommendation” and “the one we use” actually mean when you see them on a page, so you know how much weight to give a pick.
The three kinds of evidence behind a pick
- Manufacturer specs and documentation. Tesla’s own manual and spec pages for things like cargo volume, LATCH anchor placement, roof load ratings, and charging equipment. When a guide states a hard number (165 lb roof rating, a 4.1 cu ft frunk), that’s where it comes from, and we link to the source where we can.
- Owner reports. For fit questions Tesla doesn’t document (does this stroller fit the frunk, does this cooler fit the sub-trunk), we look at what real owners have measured and reported, usually across several independent accounts before we call something owner-verified.
- Our own use. A small number of products on this site are ones we actually own and use in our own Model Y. Those are labeled plainly as “the one we use” or similar, right in the text, not buried in a badge. Everything else is research-based, not hands-on.

- Gyeon leather care, for the interior
We try not to blur those three together. If a guide says a seat “fits,” that’s either Tesla’s own spec, a pattern across multiple owner reports, or something we’ve installed ourselves, and we aim to make clear which one it is rather than let a research-based pick read like a personal endorsement.

Where the money comes from
Plugin Parents earns a commission on qualifying purchases through Amazon and a small number of other retailer programs. That doesn’t change which products we pick first: we’re not paid to feature anything, and we don’t display prices, since we’d rather you check the current price than trust a number that goes stale. This is a young, honest site
Plugin Parents is new, and most of what’s here so far is research-based rather than hands-on. We’d rather say that plainly than dress up a spec sheet as a test. As we use more of what we write about, we’ll add it here and mark it clearly on the guides themselves.
