What washer fluid should you use in a Tesla?
Every Tesla manual says the same thing: use automotive washer fluid with no water repellent or bug wash, and one with antifreeze when it drops below 40°F (4°C). Never use plain water, which Tesla warns can grow bacteria in the climate system. We use Clean Revolution’s EV Windshield Washer Fluid in our 2026 Model Y.
Our top pick
Clean Revolution EV Windshield Washer Fluid (128 oz)
Owner-testedOne gallon$26.05 off today on Amazon · price as of 2026-10-31Good for: Year-round use in a Tesla; methanol-free, so it’s gentler around kids and paint; one gallon fills the reservoir with a little left over.
Watch out for: It costs more than the blue stuff at the gas station, and a full gallon jug is awkward to pour, so use a funnel.
Skip it if: You’re happy with any store washer fluid that has freeze protection for your winter. Tesla doesn’t require a special brand.
Quick Answer
Best Washer Fluid for a Tesla
The best washer fluid for a Tesla Model Y follows Tesla’s manual: automotive washer fluid with no water repellent or bug wash, and antifreeze for winter. We go one step further and use one made for EVs: Clean Revolution’s EV Windshield Washer Fluid, in our 2026 Model Y. Below: what Tesla says to use and avoid, why we picked this one, how to save on it, and, at the bottom, how to top it up.

Our pick: Clean Revolution EV Washer Fluid
Tesla’s rules vs. the fluid we use
| Tesla’s manual says | Clean Revolution EV, per the maker |
|---|---|
| Use automotive washer fluid, never plain water | ✓ Pre-mixed automotive washer fluid, ready to pour |
| Use fluid with antifreeze when it’s below 40°F (4°C) | ✓ Rated to keep working down to -15°F (-26°C) |
| Avoid washer fluid with water repellent | ✓ Silicone-free formula |
Also per the maker: ethanol-based and methanol-free, biodegradable, made in the USA. 4.7 stars from about 700 Amazon reviews.
We use Clean Revolution’s EV fluid because it meets the manual’s other rules: it’s made for electric vehicles, it doesn’t contain bug remover, and the listing says it’s methanol-free and winter-ready down to -15°F. We’re going by the label, the listing and Tesla’s manual, not lab testing of our own.
One thing we’ve noticed in our own car: the fluid is green, but it doesn’t leave blue spots all over the windows the way the fluid our Model Y came with did.
Clean Revolution describes it as “All-Season, Streak-Free Driving: Biodegradable formula cleans road salt, grime and dirt.”

What washer fluid does Tesla say to use?
Tesla’s manual is specific about a few things:
The Model 3, Model S, Model X and Cybertruck manuals give the same instructions, so this applies to any Tesla.
- Tesla’s owner’s manuals say Tesla “recommends using only the recommended windshield washer fluids for your vehicle, which are available to purchase from Service,” and point to parts.tesla.com for guidance. That’s the official, zero-guesswork option.
- Don’t use fluids that add water repellent or bug wash. Tesla says these can cause streaking, smearing and squeaking noises from the wipers.
- Below about 40°F (4°C), use a fluid with antifreeze. Fluid without it can freeze and hurt visibility.
- Use washer fluid made for automotive use, not plain water. Tesla warns untreated water can grow bacteria in the climate system and cause odors, and damage from that isn’t covered by warranty.
Is it worth paying more than gas-station washer fluid?
Yes, this costs more than the jug you can grab at a gas station. But if you care about the car, it’s worth following what Tesla’s manual asks for. Tesla’s own fluid, sold through Tesla Service, is the official option; this one meets the manual’s other rules. To bring the cost down, buy the 2-pack or the 4-pack: both cost less per ounce than a single jug (the 4-pack by the most when we checked in October 2026), and you’ll have a good supply on hand for winter.
How much does a Model Y hold?
Tesla lists the reservoir at 4.5 liters, about 1.2 gallons. In practice we’d buy a full gallon if the car says it’s low, since a nearly empty reservoir takes all of it.

How to add washer fluid to a Model Y
The washer fluid reservoir fills from the front trunk (frunk). Open the hood, wipe around the filler cap, pop the cap, pour until the fluid is just below the filler neck, then close the cap and wipe up any spills. The reservoir holds about 4.5 liters, a little over a gallon, so a gallon jug covers most refills.
What you need
- A gallon of automotive washer fluid, like the Clean Revolution EV fluid above
- A clean rag or paper towel for the cap area and any spills
- Optional: a funnel, if you think you’ll make a mess (this inexpensive funnel set works)
- Two minutes
These are the same steps Tesla gives in its owner’s documentation, with our own car in the photos.
- Open the front trunk. Use the touchscreen or the Tesla app.
- Clean around the filler cap first. Wipe away any dirt so it doesn’t fall into the reservoir.
- Open the filler cap.
- Pour slowly until the fluid level is visible just below the filler neck. Stop there; don’t overfill.
- Wipe up spills immediately and rinse the spot with water.
- Close the cap and close the frunk.

The car tells you when it’s low: a message appears on the touchscreen. If you’re starting from empty, plan on at least a full gallon.
A safety note
Washer fluid can irritate your eyes and skin, so read the manufacturer’s label. Keep it away from kids, and clean up spills on paint and in the frunk right away.
