Quick verdict: Samsung T7 Shield
Owner-testedA simple Sentry Mode and Dashcam upgrade: plug it into the glovebox USB port and the car formats it. 1TB is plenty for most owners; we use the 2TB only because we caught it on a good deal.$271.286% off today on Amazon · price as of 2026-10-31
Our Model Y saves its Sentry Mode and Dashcam footage to a Samsung T7 Shield portable SSD that lives in the glovebox. It’s been plugged in since we set it up, and the car hasn’t shown a single warning or error. Here’s our setup, with photos of ours.

Short answer
A portable SSD is one of the simplest upgrades for a Model Y. Plug it into the USB port in the glovebox, let the car format it, and from then on it saves your Sentry Mode and Dashcam clips. Ours is the 2TB T7 Shield, which is more space than most people need. We bought it because the price was right.

How we set it up
- We plugged the drive into the USB port in the glovebox.
- The car formatted it on its own. We didn’t need a computer.
- From then on, Sentry Mode and Dashcam clips save to the drive.
- We set a glovebox PIN, so the drive stays locked away when we hand the car to a valet.
If your car doesn’t offer to format the drive when you plug it in, there’s a format option in the car’s settings. Tesla’s owner’s manual for your software version shows where it is.

Why we went with the Shield
Durability. The Shield is Samsung’s rugged version of the T7, and Samsung rates it IP65 for water and dust resistance. A drive that lives in a car year-round should be tough. It’s probably overkill, but we see it as a long-term buy, and so far it’s given us zero problems: no errors, no warnings and no heat issues.
Why not just use the drive Tesla includes?
Our Model Y came with a 128GB USB drive in the glovebox, and it works for Sentry Mode and Dashcam. The catch is space. A 128GB drive fills up much faster, so older clips get overwritten sooner. Swapping to the T7 Shield gave us far more room, and we haven’t had to think about it since.
What size do you need?
Probably not 2TB. We went big because we got a really good deal. The upside of a bigger drive is that it holds a lot more footage before it fills up, so you’re not dealing with overwriting as often as you might with a small drive. The only reason we’d say you need 2TB is if you want to partition it so you can also play music from it.
If you don’t need that much space, the 1TB T7 Shield (Amazon) is the same drive with less room.

Have we needed the footage yet?
Not yet, and we hope we never do. But it saves a ton, so it’s there if we ever need it.
Which Samsung drive should you get?
Samsung makes a few close cousins of our drive, and any of them will record Sentry Mode and Dashcam clips. Here’s how they differ:
| Drive | Sizes on Amazon | What’s different | Who it’s for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung T7 | 1TB · 2TB | Slim aluminum shell, same top speed as the Shield | Most owners. It does the job for less. |
| Samsung T7 Shield (ours) | 1TB · 2TB | Rugged rubber exterior, rated IP65 for dust and water | Owners who want a tougher drive to leave in the glovebox |
| Samsung T9 | 1TB | Up to about twice as fast, but only on computers with the newest USB ports | Not needed for a Tesla. You won’t notice the extra speed when recording clips. |
Size: 1TB is more than most owners need. Go bigger only if you want to keep more footage before old clips get overwritten, or if you want to partition the drive so you can also play music from it. We didn’t see a 500GB version in stock on Amazon when we checked.
Shield or regular T7? The Shield is built tougher, and that may be more than you need. We chose it because a drive that sits in a glovebox through summer heat and winter cold benefits from that rugged build. If you just want something that works, the regular T7 is the better value.

Shield too pricey right now? Two alternatives
Portable SSD prices have climbed a lot in 2026, and the T7 Shield has gone up with them. Any fast, reliable USB SSD works for Sentry Mode and Dashcam, so if the Shield’s price is a sticking point, these are the two we’d look at.
Samsung T7 Portable SSD (1TB)
Research pickSold by Amazon · about 12,000 reviews · usually cheaper than the Shield$230.0116% off today on Amazon · price as of 2026-10-31
The same Samsung T7 family and speed as the Shield, without the rubber shell. For a drive that sits in the glovebox, the shell matters little, so this is the value pick.
SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD (1TB, new model)
Research pickSold by Amazon · newer listing with fewer reviews so far$239.5020% off today on Amazon · price as of 2026-10-31
SanDisk’s long-running Extreme line from a different brand. The current model’s listing is new, so it has fewer reviews than the previous version (which is currently sold by a third-party seller, so we’d skip that one).

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do you plug a USB drive into a Model Y for Sentry Mode?
We use the USB port in the glovebox. The drive stays plugged in all the time.
Do you need to format the SSD on a computer?
We didn’t. We plugged it in and the car formatted it.
Do you need a 2TB drive for Tesla Sentry Mode?
No. We got 2TB because of a good deal. A smaller drive works; a bigger one just holds more footage before it fills up, and the extra room helps if you want to partition it for music.
Can a valet get to the drive?
Not if you set a glovebox PIN, which is what we did.
Do I need the T7 Shield, or will a regular T7 work?
A regular Samsung T7 works fine for Sentry Mode and Dashcam. The Shield adds a rugged, IP65-rated build that suits a drive living in a car, but it may be more than you need.
Can I just use the USB drive Tesla includes?
Yes, it works. Ours came with a 128GB drive, but it fills up faster, so older clips get overwritten sooner. A larger SSD gives you much more room.

Can the Samsung T7 be used as a Tesla dash cam drive?
Yes. Tesla’s built-in Dashcam and Sentry Mode both record to the same USB drive, so the T7 handles dash cam footage and Sentry clips together.
