How we researched this: we haven’t tested winter tires on our own Model Y. Everything here comes from Tesla: its tire support page, the Model Y owner’s manual and the Tesla Shop listing, checked October 22, 2026. There are no affiliate links. Prices and stock change, so confirm with Tesla or your owner’s manual before you buy.
Most Model Y families find out the hard way that “all-season” doesn’t mean “all winter.” Here’s what Tesla itself says, what a winter setup costs, and how to decide before the first cold snap.
What Tesla says about winter tires
Tesla’s tire support page explains that all-season tires (marked ALL SEASON or M+S on the sidewall) give adequate traction in most conditions, but they may not provide the same grip as winter tires on snow or ice. Winter tires use rubber that stays flexible in the cold, plus deeper tread blocks and siping. Tesla’s advice is to switch once the temperature is consistently at or below 45°F, not when the first snow falls.
The Model Y owner’s manual makes the same point, notes that winter tires are sold through the Tesla Shop, and says tire chains can add traction (check local rules and the manual’s chain section first). It also warns that tire pressure drops about 1 PSI for every 10°F drop in outside temperature, so check your pressures when it turns cold.
Tesla’s winter wheel and tire package
The Tesla Shop lists the Model Y 19-inch Crossflow Wheel and Winter Tire Package at $2,750, with a choice of Michelin X-Ice Snow+ or Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 tires in 255/45R19. Either version comes with four Crossflow wheels, four tire-pressure sensors and installation at a Tesla Service Center. Tire taxes and fees are paid separately at the service visit.
Two things to check first. Tesla says the package fits the Model Y and Model Y Premium, but not the Model Y Performance or the Model Y L Premium. And it showed out of stock when we checked on October 22; the listing lets you sign up for a restock email.
Tesla is also running a $100 rebate on four eligible Michelin tires bought through the Tesla Shop or a Tesla Service Center between October 1 and December 31, 2026, with submissions due by January 15, 2027. The details are on Tesla’s tire offers page.
Looking at other tires? Tesla’s advice is to know whether a tire is built for summer, all-season or winter driving before you buy. Your size is on the tire sidewall and the label in the driver’s door pillar, and a Tesla Service Center can tell you which winter tires it installs for your wheels.
When to switch
- Watch the temperature, not the snow. Tesla’s advice is to switch once it’s consistently 45°F or colder.
- Order early. Tesla’s package was out of stock when we checked, and demand rises as it gets cold.
- Check your trim. The package doesn’t fit the Model Y Performance or the Model Y L Premium.
- Check your pressures when it turns cold. Tesla’s manual says pressure drops about 1 PSI for every 10°F, so set them to the number on your door-pillar label.

Tesla Model Y winter tires FAQ
Does a Tesla Model Y need winter tires?
Tesla recommends them in snowy or icy conditions and once temperatures are consistently at or below 45°F. All-season tires may not match their traction on snow and ice.
Can I use all-season tires in the snow?
You can drive on them in light snow, but Tesla says they may not give the same traction as winter tires on snow or ice.
Does Tesla’s winter package fit the Model Y Performance?
No. Tesla lists its 19-inch Crossflow winter package as compatible with the Model Y and Model Y Premium, but not the Model Y Performance or the Model Y L Premium.
Can I use tire chains?
Tesla’s manual says chains can add traction, but check local regulations and its chain section before buying.
