Thanksgiving in a Tesla with kids, in short: leave Tuesday night or early Wednesday, skip Wednesday afternoon and Sunday at the Superchargers, let the car warm the battery on the way to each stop, and plan charging around the breaks your kids need anyway. Waits are rarer than people fear: Tesla says fewer than 1 in 100 Thanksgiving charging sessions last year involved one.
When to leave (and when to come home)
Over last year’s Thanksgiving travel period, Wednesday through Sunday, Tesla reported that only 0.76% of more than 2 million Supercharger sessions involved a wait. To stay ahead of the holiday traffic, leave Tuesday night or early Wednesday if you can, head home Saturday or early Monday, and check live stall availability in the Tesla app before each stop.
Plan charging stops around the kids
Young kids need a break every couple of hours anyway, so line up charging with bathroom and snack stops instead of fighting it. In the car’s navigation, Supercharger listings show how many stalls are free, and many stops sit next to restaurants with restrooms, which matters more with kids than a few extra miles of range.
Navigate to each Supercharger in the car rather than in a phone app: the car warms the battery on the way so it charges faster when you arrive. You also rarely need to charge to 100%; charging to what gets you to the next stop with a buffer is usually quicker.
Cold-weather range
Late November can be cold, and cold costs range. In Recurrent’s real-world data on more than 18,000 EVs, the Model Y kept about 86% of its range in freezing weather, better than the average EV. Leave with the car warmed up while it’s still plugged in at home, use the heated seats, and plan slightly shorter legs than you would in summer. Top up winter-rated washer fluid before you go: here’s what we use.
Kids, coats and car seats
A pre-warmed car makes cold-weather stops easier on everyone. For car seats and winter clothing, follow your car seat maker’s manual, and a certified child passenger safety technician (CPST) can answer questions about your specific seat.
What to pack
Our Model Y road-trip essentials covers the full list. For a holiday drive with kids, the short version: snacks and wipes within reach of the back seat, headphones for the rear screen (see the rear screen with kids), a blanket, and a tire inflator, since the Model Y has no spare tire. If you’re hauling pies and a pack-and-play, check what fits where before you load up.

Audiobooks for the drive
Kids’ audiobooks are one of the easiest road-trip wins: everyone listens through the car speakers, nobody fights over a screen, and a good story can carry you between charging stops. If you don’t have Audible, a free trial covers a long holiday drive.
