Research-Based Recommendation

Short answerMostly yes. The 2025–2026 Juniper Model Y has an 8-inch touchscreen for the back seat, mounted above the rear air vents, on the Launch Series, Long Range, Premium and Performance trims and the three-row Model Y L. The lower-cost Model Y Standard, introduced in late 2025, does not have one — it’s one of the features Tesla cut to hit the lower price. The 2020–early 2025 Model Y never had one.

Whether it’s worth caring about depends entirely on how old your kids are. Here’s what it actually does, what it can’t, and how families end up using it.

What the Rear Screen Does

  • Video and streaming. The same entertainment apps as the front screen (Netflix, YouTube, Disney+ and the rest) play on the rear screen while the car is moving. That needs a data connection: Tesla’s Premium Connectivity subscription or a phone hotspot.
  • Two Bluetooth headsets at once. Tap the headphone icon and pair two sets, so two kids can watch without the driver hearing a word of it. This is the feature that sells parents.
  • Rear climate. Fan speed, temperature, airflow direction and the rear seat heaters, without the driver touching anything.
  • Front passenger seat position. Arrows to slide the front passenger seat forward if a rear-facing car seat needs the room.
  • Media controls and volume for whatever is playing.

What It Can’t Do (Yet)

  • No games on the rear screen; those stay on the front display and only when parked.
  • No independent audio through the car speakers: rear video audio goes to the headsets or shares the cabin sound.
  • No true parental lock, but the front screen has a rear screen remote control app in the bottom bar that lets the driver see and take over the rear screen, pause video, or turn it off. That’s the practical control.

Is It Worth It for Kids?

Honest answer by age:

  • Under 3: not really. A rear-facing car seat faces away from it, and a forward-facing toddler is too far from an 8-inch screen for it to hold attention. Save the money or spend it on the glass roof sunshade instead.
  • Ages 4–9: yes, this is the sweet spot. Two kids, two headsets, a two-hour drive, and the front seats are quiet. It replaces the headrest tablet mount setup most parents build themselves.
  • 10 and up: they’ll use their own phone. The screen becomes a climate control panel.

If the rear screen is the thing that’s tipping you toward a higher trim, our trim guide for families weighs it against the other differences. If you’ve got an older Model Y without it, the back seat organizer guide covers headrest tablet mounts, which get you 80% of the way there for a lot less.

At kid height, the 8-inch screen picks up fingerprints and the occasional kicked shoe fast. A matte protector cut for the rear screen keeps it scratch-free without dulling the touch response.

Protecting It

An 8-inch touchscreen at kid height gets fingerprints, juice and the occasional kicked shoe. A matte screen protector cut for the rear screen is a cheap fix; our screen protector guide covers the ones made for it alongside the front display.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the rear screen play video while driving?

Yes. Unlike the front screen, rear passengers can stream video while the car is in motion, which is the whole point of it.

Do I need Premium Connectivity for the rear screen?

For streaming, you need either Premium Connectivity or a Wi-Fi hotspot from a phone. Climate and seat controls work without any subscription.

Which headphones work?

Any standard Bluetooth headphones. Kid-sized ones with a volume limiter are the sensible choice; the screen pairs two at a time.

Can I add a rear screen to a pre-2025 Model Y?

Not Tesla’s. Aftermarket screens that mount to the back of the center console exist and work reasonably well, but they’re a separate device with their own apps, not an extension of the car.
