Tesla didn’t switch every Model Y at once. The bigger screen arrived trim by trim through 2026, which is why forum answers from even a few months ago contradict each other. Here’s how it breaks down, how to check your own car, and what it affects.

Beyond size, the 16-inch screen is a wider 16:9 shape (the 15.4-inch is 16:10), sharper at 2560×1440, and has thinner bezels. That shape difference is why a protector for one won’t sit right on the other, even though the sizes sound close. The 8-inch rear screen is the same on every car that has one; the Model Y Standard doesn’t have a rear screen at all.
How to check your own car
- Look at the bezels. This is the most reliable check. The 16-inch screen has slim black borders and looks wider and shorter; the 15.4-inch has noticeably thicker borders.
- Check trim and delivery date together. Year alone isn’t enough, because a 2026 Premium and a 2026 Standard can have different screens.
- When in doubt, measure the glass before ordering anything cut to fit.

Screen protectors: buy the right size
This is where the change costs people money: a 16-inch protector won’t fit a 15.4-inch screen, and the reverse leaves an uncovered strip. Both of these are Spigen’s tempered-glass protectors, cut for different screens:

Phone and tablet mounts that attach to the back or edge of the center screen were designed around one shape or the other. Check that the listing names your screen size. Mounts that go on the vents or dash aren’t affected.
What’s not affected

Can I upgrade a 15.4-inch car to the 16-inch screen?
Not through Tesla, which doesn’t offer it as a retrofit. Some owners have installed the part themselves, but that’s a DIY job with warranty questions attached, and for most families the 15.4-inch screen is perfectly good.
