Our Model Y is wrapped in XPEL Stealth matte film with a Fusion Plus ceramic coating on top. That’s a lot of money sitting on the paint, so we wash it a specific way. This is the exact routine and the exact products, all of which we own and use.
The rules we follow
- Hand wash only. Automatic car washes with brushes are off limits for film and coatings.
- Every 3–4 weeks. That’s the goal. We don’t always hit it.
- Bird droppings come off right away. They etch film and coatings if they sit, so we don’t let them.
- Nothing abrasive, no wax, no polish. Matte film like Stealth can’t be polished, and wax or a gloss detailer will leave shiny patches. The products below are all safe for matte film and ceramic coatings.
Step 1: Tires first
We start with the tires, before anything else touches the car. They get Blackline’s Wheel & Tire cleaner, a non-acid formula (bought direct from Blackline, since it isn’t sold on Amazon), and a scrub with Blackline’s stiff-bristle tire brush, then a rinse, so nothing from them ends up on the paint mitt.

We use an AVA Go+ pressure washer. It comes with a foam cannon and most, if not all, of the accessories you need, which is why we picked it over building a kit piece by piece. XPEL’s Foam Soap goes in the cannon. The foam sits for a few minutes and lifts the loose dirt off before anything touches the car, which is the whole point: less grit under the mitt means fewer marks.

While the foam dwells, the tires get a second scrub with the tire cleaner and brush.

Once the foam is rinsed off and the tires are done, we wash with a Chemical Guys chenille mitt and XPEL Wash Solution, working top down. The wash bucket has a Chemical Guys dirt trap insert in the bottom, so grit falls through and doesn’t end up back on the mitt. It’s an inexpensive part that does more to protect the film than anything else in the bucket.

This is where the Model Y fights you. Water hides in the camera housings, the door jambs, the mirror caps and every trim gap, and it drips out for an hour after you think you’re done. Two things fixed that for us.
First, the Blackline Twisted Loop drying towel. It’s the single product we recommend most from this whole list. It soaks up an entire panel without dragging, and it’s the only towel we’ve used that doesn’t leave streaks on the matte film.

Second, a Ryobi ONE+ 18V compact blower. We blow the water out of the camera areas, the door jambs, the charge port door and the trim before it can run down the panels. It’s the same battery platform as the rest of our Ryobi tools, so it was an easy add. Ryobi sells through Home Depot, so that’s where ours came from.

Chemical Guys microfiber towels handle the touch-up drying and the interior.

Step 5: Dress the tires
After the car is dry, the tires get dressed with Blackline Blackout Trim & Tire Dressing: a satin finish, no sling.

If you wash in the sun or your water is hard, spots happen. XPEL’s Water Spot Remover is what we keep for that, and it’s safe on the film and coating. Wash in the shade or early in the day and you’ll rarely need it.

- No brush car washes, ever. Touchless is the only automatic option we’d consider, and we still prefer hand washing.
- No wax, polish or gloss detailer on the matte film.
- No products that aren’t labeled safe for PPF. Check the label before you use anything on the film, and if you have matte film like ours, check that it says safe for matte PPF too.
- No letting bird droppings, tree sap or bug splatter sit.
Prices, fit and availability for the products above were last checked in October 2026; check the listing for the current price before you buy.
Washing a Model Y with PPF: FAQ
Can you take a Tesla with PPF through a car wash?
Not one with brushes. They can lift film edges and scratch the surface. Hand wash, or a touchless wash if you have to.
How do you wash matte PPF like XPEL Stealth?
The same way as gloss film, but never wax or polish it and skip any detailer with gloss agents. pH-neutral soap, soft mitt, plush towel.
How often should you wash a ceramic-coated car?
We aim for every 3–4 weeks. The coating makes dirt release easily, so it doesn’t need more than that unless something lands on it.
Do you need a pressure washer?
No, but a foam pre-wash is the most reliable way to get grit off before you touch the paint. The AVA Go+ made that easy because everything comes in the box.
Can a Tesla Model Y go through a car wash?
Yes. Tesla’s Car Wash Mode (Controls > Service > Car Wash Mode) prepares the car for an automatic wash. With PPF or a ceramic coating, though, we hand wash only: brush car washes can scratch film and wear down a coating.
