The Basic Rule

Blot, don’t rub. Then clean with something mild, wipe with clean water, and dry with a microfiber. That handles juice, milk, crushed crackers, chocolate and most markers. What you avoid matters more than what you use: no bleach, no ammonia (so no glass cleaner), no magic erasers, no all-purpose degreasers, no alcohol wipes on a regular basis. All of those strip the top coat that keeps the white from staining.

Juice, milk, formula

Blot with a dry cloth, then a damp microfiber with a drop of dish soap in warm water. Wipe, rinse-wipe with plain water, dry. Milk and formula need the rinse step or they sour in the seams. Check the seam stitching and the gap between the seat base and back; that’s where it pools.

Chocolate, crayon, food grease

Let chocolate harden and pick off what you can before you wipe, or you’ll spread it. Blue jean and dark fabric transfer

The most common white-seat complaint has nothing to do with kids: dye transfer from dark jeans on the driver’s bolster. A vinyl-safe interior cleaner and a microfiber handles fresh transfer. Set-in transfer needs a couple of passes; don’t escalate to a magic eraser, which removes the transfer by removing the finish.

Ink and marker

Act fast. A small amount of isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab, dabbed on the mark only, then immediately wiped with the mild cleaner and water. Alcohol is a last resort because it dries the surface; using it once on a mark is fine, using it as a routine cleaner is not.

Accidents (urine, vomit)

This one is different because the problem is smell, not stain, and the smell lives in the seam and the foam under the seat, not on the surface. Blot everything you can, then an enzyme cleaner (the pet-stain kind) on the seam and any carpet it reached; enzymes break the urea down instead of masking it. Let it sit 10–15 minutes, blot, repeat. Wipe the seat surface with the mild cleaner. If it soaked into the seat foam, the rear seat base unclips and lifts out so you can treat the foam directly; otherwise the smell comes back on the first hot day.

Protecting the Seats So This Happens Less
