A roof box is the single biggest capacity upgrade for a family Model Y: it moves the bulky, light stuff (the pack-and-play, bedding, beach gear, the ski bag) out of the cabin so the kids aren’t buried. But the Model Y has a glass roof, a power liftgate that swings high, and crossbars set closer together than many boxes expect, so “fits most SUVs” isn’t good enough. Here’s what actually fits, based on what owners have mounted and reported.

Three checks before you buy any box

• You need a roof rack. The Model Y has no factory rails. Tesla sells its own rack (compatible with every Model Y except the Model Y L), and there are well-reviewed aftermarket crossbars; our roof rack guide covers both.
• Crossbar spread is about 35.5 to 36 inches. That’s the front-to-back distance between the bars on the Model Y, and it’s on the short side. A box’s mounting hardware has to reach both bars; owners have had boxes rated for a 36-inch spread that still wouldn’t latch on both. Check the box’s stated mounting range before you order.
• Liftgate clearance. Slide the box as far forward as the mounts allow, then open the liftgate slowly the first time. If it gets close, set a lower maximum opening height: stop the liftgate at the height you want, then press and hold the button on its underside for a few seconds until it chimes. Owners of both Thule boxes below report no contact once positioned correctly.

We haven’t seen enough Model Y owner reports yet to call it verified, so check its crossbar-spread range against the Model Y’s roughly 35.5 to 36 inches, or buy from a store that lets you test-fit.

What owners say doesn’t fit well

Owners report the Thule Motion XT Sport doesn’t fit the Model Y’s crossbar spread, and at least one owner couldn’t get a Yakima SkyBox 16 to latch on both bars despite matching specs. If you’re set on a box not listed here, test-fit it before your trip.
