The right Tesla Model Y pet protection gear keeps claws, fur, and mud off the seats and cargo area.
A dog riding loose in the back seat means muddy paw prints on the seats, scratched leather, and a driver distracted every time a 60-pound lab decides the front seat looks more interesting. Here’s what actually keeps a Model Y’s interior, and your dog, protected and secure on the way to the park or the vet.

Back-Seat Dog Hammocks That Fit the Model Y
Most dogs ride in the back, so a hammock that covers the rear bench (and hooks to both front and rear headrests) is the seat cover most Model Y owners actually want. These two are made for the Model Y, including the 2025–2027 Juniper. We haven’t tested these ourselves, so both are research picks based on the makers’ fit claims.

BASENOR Model Y Pet Seat Cover (Hammock)
Research pick
BASENOR says it fits the 2020–2026 Model Y, including the Juniper: hooks into the headrest posts and works with the 60/40 split. Sold on BASENOR’s site (no commission), about $40.
A four-layer waterproof barrier between the seat and a wet or muddy dog, with a cotton-topped comfort layer so your pet isn’t sitting directly on plastic or vinyl. Universal fit works across the front seats of most vehicles including the Model Y, and it’s machine washable when it inevitably needs a wash.
A breathable mesh barrier that keeps a small-to-medium dog safely in the back seat and prevents paws and claws from scratching the center console.
Where should a dog ride in a Model Y?
The back seat is the usual choice. A seat cover protects the upholstery, and a barrier keeps a curious dog out of the front. For extra safety, secure your dog with a harness sold as crash-tested by its maker clipped to the seat belt, or use a crate.
The cargo area works for crate-trained dogs, especially on longer trips. Put down a cargo liner first, and keep the crate secured so it can’t slide when you brake.
Keeping your dog comfortable: Dog Mode
Model Y has a built-in Dog Mode. It keeps the cabin climate running while you’re parked and shows a message on the center screen so passersby know your dog is comfortable and you’ll be back soon. You can check the cabin temperature from the Tesla app. Treat it as a short-stop convenience, not a reason to leave a dog for long.
Getting dog hair out of the car
A good cordless vacuum does most of the work. We use the Fanttik V8 Mate in our own Model Y for crumbs and fur. A rubber pet-hair brush lifts what the vacuum leaves in carpet and mats, and washable seat covers mean most of the mess never reaches the seats at all. For mud and wet paws, all-weather mats and kick mats protect the floor and seatbacks.

Tesla Model Y Pet Protection: Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Tesla Model Y have a Dog Mode?
Yes. Dog Mode keeps the cabin at a set temperature while the car is parked and displays a message on the screen letting people know your pet is fine. Turn it on from the climate controls before you leave the car.
Does a dog barrier work with the Model Y’s center console and armrest?
Universal barriers like the Spigen mesh divider are designed to stretch across the gap between the front seats and secure around the headrests, so they generally work regardless of console shape: check the listing’s photos against your interior before buying if you have a non-standard console setup.
Will a seat cover damage the Model Y’s factory upholstery?
No: a properly fitted seat cover sits on top of the factory material and is designed to be removed and washed, so it shouldn’t cause any lasting damage. Look for one with secure anchors so it doesn’t shift under the seatbelt.
Can a dog ride safely in the front seat of a Model Y?
Most safety experts recommend keeping dogs in the back seat, both to avoid airbag injury risk and to prevent them from interfering with driving: a back-seat barrier or a secured harness is generally the safer setup.
Do dog seat covers fit the Model Y Juniper?
Universal hammocks often do, but the surest bet is one made for the Model Y. The URPOWER and BASENOR hammocks above both list the 2025–2027 Juniper. Measure your back seat before buying a universal cover.
